Ahead of this year’s international women’s day, on March 8th, Sightsavers’ Director of Global Advocacy, Elizabeth Kurian, who is based in Mumbai, was presented with the prestigious Women Super Achiever award at Asia’s World Women Leadership Congress in Taj Lands End.

As an inspirational leader at the top of her field, the award has been given in recognition for her leadership and influence in the areas of eye health, disability and social inclusion at Sightsavers.

This year, the United Nations’ theme for the annual international women’s day is Inspiring Change, which is being celebrated among women across the globe.

The World Women Leadership Congress presents its illustrious award to “the outstanding women professionals who have the vision, flair, acumen and professionalism to demonstrate excellent leadership and management skills in organisations, making changes and achieving results.”

Elizabeth has worked for Sightsavers since 1999 overseeing the charity’s programme work to prevent unnecessary blindness and restore sight, as well as representing Sightsavers in India and internationally. She believes that good public health is fundamental to sustainable development.

Elizabeth Kurian said:

“Winning the Women’s Super Achiever Award brings great satisfaction as it shows recognition of what team work can achieve, and the transformational impact that Sightsavers’ work has. Having this recognised by industries outside the sector should help make an even bigger impact for the people for whom we work.”
Sightsavers, whose headquarters is in West Sussex, works in more than thirty developing countries to prevent blindness and restore sight. The international development charity also advocates for social inclusion and equal rights for people with disabilities. Increasing access to health, education and employment opportunities enables people to lift themselves out of poverty.

Elizabeth studied Business Management at the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata and has a MSc in Nutrition from the University of Mumbai, for which she topped the university and received a gold medal. She has won other prestigious awards such as the TS Bamankar award in 2010 for excellence in contribution to the disability sector in India. Instituted by the Poona Blind Men’s Association (PBMA).

The World Women Leadership Congress Awards were held in Mumbai on 14th February. The strategic partners for the congress in 2014 are; World Federation of Marketing Professionals, Stars of the Industry Group, Asian Confederation of Business, and the World CSR Day.
