Bhuri Devi

Restoring Vision and Independence

Bhuri Devi, a 60-year-old woman from a small village in Rajasthan, has spent her life managing household duties and labour work alongside her husband, who earns a modest living through furniture making and farming. She began experiencing blurred vision, making close-up tasks like cleaning grains and sewing increasingly difficult. However, due to financial constraints and the fact that women in her community often lacked the financial freedom to make purchases, Bhuri Devi didn’t seek help for her worsening vision.

Her opportunity for care came when a rickshaw promoting an upcoming free eye camp, organised by Sightsavers India, passed through her village. Supported by the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, the camp offered her a chance to get her vision checked. Diagnosed with near vision impairment (+2.5), Bhuri Devi received free spectacles on the spot.

With her new glasses, she can now perform her daily chores with ease and confidence. The simple yet profound impact of the spectacles has restored her independence, and Bhuri Devi expressed heartfelt gratitude to Sightsavers India and the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation for their support.

Bhuri Devi’s story shows us the often-overlooked eye health needs of women in rural communities. With the support of donors, Sightsavers India is addressing these disparities, empowering women to regain their independence and dignity through improved vision. For women like Bhuri Devi, these spectacles are not just medical aids—they are a pathway to a better quality of life.
