Akali’s story

Akali’s Journey to Restored Vision

Shri Akali , a 65-year-old from, Katni, Madhya Pradesh lives a modest life with his wife. His two sons and two daughters are married and settled elsewhere. To sustain themselves, Shri Akali and his wife engage in agricultural labour and goat rearing. When not in the fields, he helps with household chores, supporting his wife in every way he can.

However, over a period of six months, Shri Akali’s vision began to deteriorate. He suffered from continuous tearing and a burning sensation in his eyes, making daily tasks increasingly difficult. His condition forced him to pause work frequently, placing additional strain on his wife, who had to manage everything on her own.

Despite seeking help at the local community health centre and district hospital, his condition showed no signs of improvement. The turning point came on 25 November 2024, when he heard from the local Anganwadi and ASHA workers about an eye screening camp being organised by Sightsavers India, in collaboration with Samaritan Hospital, Satna, right in his village. At the camp, held at the Panchayat office, a comprehensive eye examination revealed a mature cataract in his left eye. He was immediately advised to undergo cataract surgery.

Without delay, Shri Akali visited Samaritan Hospital the same day. On 26 November 2024, he underwent cataract surgery. The operation was successful. Upon discharge, his vision in the affected eye had improved. At his follow-up appointment on 18 December 2024, his vision had further improved, which was a remarkable recovery for his age.

Thanks to the timely intervention, Akali has resumed his normal life. He is now able to support his wife in both field work and household chores without any limitations. His restored sight has brought immense relief not only to him, but also to his wife, who no longer bears the burden alone.

Today, Akali is an advocate for eye health in his village, encouraging others to attend screening camps and consider surgery if needed. His transformation is a testament to the power of accessible eye care in changing lives, especially in rural communities.

Akali and his family express heartfelt gratitude to Sightsavers India and Samaritan Hospital for bringing light back into their lives, restoring his vision, dignity, and independence.
